I had kicked this idea around before, but after Hurricane Katrina, when gas hit $3.00 a gallon, it seemed like the time was right.

Obtaining a power plant would not be a problem, but my requirement for the base bike might not be so easy. It had to be an early to mid 70’s street-trail bike with a clear title. My goal is that it will resemble something from the 40’s or 50’s.

This was just plain luck. A 1975 Honda XL 250 Basket case with title and a parts bike turned up in the local classifieds. I was off and running.

Immediately an order went out for a motor (yep, that’s a diesel power plant for a pump, generator, compressor, etc). These things are supposed to be extremely fuel efficient. So I am going to find out.
Now this thing is not going to be fast or overly powerful. With the r.p.m. available, and the ratios I’ve worked out, it should run out at around 50 m.p.h. I live and work in a rural area so this is acceptable. Getting there and back with extreme economy is my goal.

After stripping the bike to a rolling frame, a little mock up was in order. A 5 ¾” tractor head light, XS 650 special bars, and a 1958 Allstate Tank.

After determining the space needed for the motor and torque converter drive, I cut the frame and extended the backbone 5”.

The slug was made from thick wall tubing machined on each end to fit tightly inside the frame tube.
