Hammer made from schedule 80 weld on 2" pipe cap and 2" to 1" bell reducer with 3/4" pipe handle. 4x4 block of pine has enough give to allow for some rough shaping. Middle pic- oxygen cylinder cap hammer.
Don't have a beater bag but I do have a fairly large lawn. Just pick out a spot, feel around and make sure there are no rocks. Works pretty good. When your wife ask what those strange spots are, tell her a UFO landed. Click photos to Enlarge.

The blister shaped sides are taking shape. With just a little more work, these peices will be ready to weld to the perimeters.
After tig welding the sides to the perimeters, I stopped long enough to build the planishing hammer to work the lumps. Well worth the time spent. Picture really doesn't show how good of a job this thing does. These are almost ready to weld the inside peices in place.
