The most difficult part of the springer is getting the S-bend exactly the same in both legs and having the top straight portion parallel to the lower leg. In order to do this, I constructed the fixture seen below from scrap material. The 1/2" x 2" was bent with the inside offset as well as having the upper part parallel to the lower part. Then it was welded to a scrap peice of I-beam as a good base for support. The top part of the leg was heated and bent then checked with the fixture. Once it had the correct bend, it was clamped to the upper part of the fixture. Then the second part of the bend was heated, pulled into place against the fixture, and quickly clamped and allowed to cool in place. This process was repeated with the other leg. Both came out very well requiring no further adjustments. |
